What's on and tourist advice thread - week beginning October 31, 2016

I know very little about Scotland (fixing that!)--but I was just invited on a trip to drive around the country this summer. I'm researching now, but I'm a little overwhelmed on where to start and what to do.

I like outdoorsy things like hiking and biking. I'm also crazy interested in poetry. I visited Ireland and Northern Ireland last year on a grant to do research on Seamus Heaney. I'd love to learn more about Scottish poetry---if anyone has recommendations on how to find readings or interesting poets to read up on beforehand I'd be very grateful. We'll be in Glasgow for a significant part of the trip and hopping a ferry to Northern Ireland at some point, but most of the plans are up in the air.

My SO likes good food and whiskey. I generally hate tour buses and anything that involves driving around for a "photo op" and piling back with a million other people. I like exploring, theater, poetry, music, and hearing about history.

I realize this is all terribly open-ended, but if someone has ideas on where to go/what to do I'm open to any suggestions!
