What's something bad that happened to you while travelling or living abroad and how did you deal with it?

Walking on the street in France, speaking English with me and a bunch of my friends. Not a main road, not many people around. Some group of french guys come off a side street and start following us.

They began discussing in french which of us looked the best, how we were all stupid, how they'd like to hurt us, ect.

We didn't know what to do. Run? Run where? Keep walking? Call someone? What's the emergency number there?

We kept walking, discussing what to do. They assume we don't speak french and they obviously didn't speak english. We heard something about how 'all americans are so stupid' and one of my friends snapped. She turned around and shouted at them "WE ARE NOT AMERICANS YOU TRASH, WE ARE CANADIAN, YOU ARE THE WORST, WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING AROUND A GROUP OF LITTLE GIRLS YOU PEDOPHILES". It was awesome, but at the same time we're like... shit now we're done for.

They all stopped, said they thought we were american. Apologized, and then left. Wtf that still didn't make any of it ok!
