What's something you've seen that most people haven't?

My great-grandmother was born in 1899, and died when I was six -- I'm twenty-nine btw. So I met her.

But I really wish I could have also known her. At six, that wasn't possible, and all I remember of her is that she was very energetic until the day she wasn't, she liked to make very bland food, she was impressed when I ate a jalapeño to prove I could do it, and she was one of those rare individuals whose youthful physical beauty never really went away. I remember thinking how pretty she was, and even when I was older, the photos of her at 19 and 90 seemed fundamentally similar.

Time passes fast, doesn't it. My grandparents were born in history books, and so were my parents, and so was I. For my daughter, 9/11 is a history book event. It's crazy. But I think it's part of why I've always liked to make friends of all ages. When I was a teenager, my grandpa and this other 80-something guy from Iran (I'm American) were two of my best friends. The fact that the guy was from Iran created more emotional distance than his age. It was funny, we'd both tell each other stories of our youth that baffled the other -- it's just that I happened to tell my stories in the present tense.
