What's the Sounders' style of play?

Last year is gonna be different from this year and since the only preseason games so far have been closed door, it's hard to say.

But if you want to know about last year's:

  • We're a possession based team

  • When we have control of the other team's half and we have the ball on our own half. We split our CBs wide and we send our defensive backs up a line or two and have Gustav or whoever is playing the 6 drop between them and get the ball for us and move it forward.

  • Once we're in the opponents half, we overloaded the left side of the field last year because we had Brad Smith and Victor Rodriguez and they would wreck havoc. Brad Smith would hit in crosses for the most part and look for Raul Ruidiaz or Jordan Morris.

  • Or if we can't find a way to score and gathered most of the other team's attention on the left. We hit a switch for the right side because by then most of the opposing team will have left room on the right. This is why we had Leerdam scoring 5 goals for us last season as a RB.

  • But we only really played the "overload the left" way when Brad Smith was available or uninjured.

  • Lodeiro has freedom to move where he pleases so he doesn't always follow script. But for the most part this is how we played when we were at full strength.

  • We're not exactly a counter attacking team. But we have the ability to. This was a tactical adjustment on Brian Schmetzer's part to play that way in the playoffs against LAFC and Toronto in particular.

But from the little info off of Twitter, it seems we're playing a bit differently from last year. But it's gonna be hard to say until we actually see them play.
