Apple requires that any vehicle using wireless CarPlay use the car’s GPS (as opposed to the phone’s GPS) IF the car has one. This is verifiable in the Apple developer docs for CarPlay, I haven’t looked at the android auto ones, but I’m assuming they probably have the same requirement.

For whatever reason, I believe Hyundai has not or cannot code their system to use the cars GPS for CarPlay. This is why any vehicle without a GPS has wireless CarPlay, and vice versa.

There are other requirements for wireless CarPlay, like WiFi, but the GPS vehicles should have all those. I don’t believe it’s a hardware issue.

The people telling you “oh it’s an update just around the corner” either are trying to sell a car, or believe someone who was. I do believe it’s possible Hyundai could update it, but I wouldn’t buy a car if it were a dealbreaker for me.
