What's a weird or interesting story your grandparent told you?

My grandfather was blinded by early Wehrmacht success and volunteered for Luftwaffe. He was shot down by US day fighters while still in training and spent a big part of the war in hospital. When he was ready again he was sent to the Battle of Berlin as cannon fodder. His entire unit burned their uniforms and deserted. As he arrived home only days after war ended it aroused suspicion and someone told the British. They interrogated him and offered him to choose: Either they'd take him to a nearby airport where the British collected captured aircraft and he'd tell them everything he knew about the planes, or he'd be sent to a POW camp. He opted for telling them, but he held a lifelong grudge against the woman who reported him.
