Had a class with this girl in college, in the era (2005) where Facebook was spreading, and you deemed it worthwhile to add everyone who's face you'd seen before. Zero interaction between 2005 and the date, 2009.

Just chatted a little on Facebook, which migrated to our phones. Agreed to get coffee sometime. Each of us kept canceling. Eventually, on the fourth try, she was about to cancel. This time the reason was that her weekend job, promotions for a radio station, gave her the opportunity to see Britney Spears in concert about an hour away. She floated the idea of me joining (politely, probably), or said we could reschedule. I was sick of rescheduling, so I agreed to go.

We met up and took a single car. The first thing I noticed was she had gained a lot of weight. It’s not a deal breaker, but it was a lot of weight. What was a deal breaker though, was talking about politics and religion along the way there. Essentially, I learned (I’m non-religious) that her life-changing moment of having faith in a higher power came when a John Edward-type cold reader duped her into thinking he was talking to her grandmother from beyond the grave. It was all downhill from here, and we’re still on our way TO the concert.

(Pre-Emptive Edit: I'm currently with a theist, and it's not a problem in our relationship. I respect faith and sometimes wish I had it. It was just a super turnoff for the reasoning is all.)

We show up late to the concert and find our aisle seats in the nosebleeds. I don’t follow Britney closely, but she was dressed in like a dress and top hat with snakes and shit, and most of her fans in attendance were dressed similarly. We didn’t talk the entire time we were there, so I was on my phone most of the time. The only human interaction I got was being groped by every dressed-up Britney fan who entered or exited our row. (In fact, this was likely the highlight of the night.)

We drove home in silence, and never spoke again.
