Actually this "Jews can only be safe with Jews" picked up in the 30s and 40s as a reaction to the violence. Jaffa was very mixed until migration to Tel Aviv because Jaffa became pretty dangerous. I'm not blaming Arabs, this notion that a harmonious multicultural society never pans out. And asking European to assimilate to Levantine culture is kind of insulting, Europeans were far more advanced, technologically, philosophically, etc. These days it's okay to hurl insult European culture and it's actually a very regressive that holds the Arab world behimd. We did the reverse, my Yemenite family assimilated into European culture before Zionism even was a big thing. I'm actually proud of that.
