When you want to involve yourself in (local/state) politics, but have views that don't fit neatly into any of the major parties, how do you choose which party to affiliate yourself with?

I have no intention of getting into a policy debate with you, my friend, however I would argue that the Democratic Party has moved rightwards on economics toward an almost classically liberal standard, from the McGovern's loss in 1972 to the present day. That economic turn mirrored the turn of the GOP in the post-Eisenhower years, when they began to reject the postwar consensus, culminating in the transatlantic neo-liberal "revolution" under Reagan and Thatcher. Though I disagree with the mainstream of either party on economics, it's seems that the Democrats have a faction that I agree with, while to my knowledge nobody in government with the GOP rejects the basic assumptions of Austrian-Chicago school neoliberalism. Even Trump, who for all his talk of helping the working class still argues for the state to have less control of the economy, not more.

Whether you think my viewpoint is right or wrong is beside the point, I was just answering what you said. I hope that you have a good day.
