When the “S” burns out..

Story time:

When I was in high school I frequented a bowling alley in my hometown. I would go there for dates, birthdays, hanging out with the boys and sometimes just because. It wasn’t special in any way, it was a no-name family owned place. I vaguely remember the somewhat stern religious-type older couple that owned it. Now I know that them being an older couple probably meant they didn’t think much about perverted meanings behind things. Why should they?

Well jump to my junior year in high school, the bowling alley isn’t super busy so they were trying to drum up business with specials and advertisements. It was great for me because I went there all the time and could get 1/2 off my first game. The problem came when they published their ads... Now don’t get me wrong these ads were perfectly fine in every way except... well... if you were about 16 like me it quickly became the running joke.

So what did the ad say? At the top of the ad in big red letters it said “2 $hoe Special”. Now I imagine you’re thinking did I read all that for some lame joke? No, because it wasn’t what they put but the font they used. The font they used was, as best I can describe a slightly italic font. So when it was distributed all over town through fliers and posters it read “2 $ hoe Special”.

The moral of this? Always proof your marketing with a member of the intended audience before you publish it.
