When they told us to "simulate being engaged," they should have specified, "by the enemy." (Xpost r/military)

"Back when I was in the Army I wore my OTV 24/7."

I'm a former infantry vet myself and am the son of a Vietnam vet who in turn was the son of a Korean war vet, all infantry. If there's one thing that has been consistent for the past 70 years is that it was always harder "Back in my day." That's not to say I'm trying to posit that those wars are in anyway equal to any of the modern campaigns only that if anything training has become more rigorous and comprehensive due to what the Army has learned from the past.

Also, I know for a fact that Vietnam era and Korean era soldiers didn't train in "flak."

Additionally, my father only did PT three times a week and his father didn't do any at all. (This is actually alluded to in FM21-20 about that time period, which is the previous PT FM before the current PRT one.)

"But Sar'nt ZenoOfCitiumStoa, there's a whole lot more fatties in the Army now!"

You are correct. However, the overall physical fitness of the nation is substantially lower and collectively the BMI is much much higher. Couple that with the lower recruiting standards that were in place for the past decade or so in order to get boots on ground in Iraq and Afghanistan and you will see those percentages reflected. But if you've been anywhere near the military in the past 3 or 4 years you'd know that this is getting rectified. If you are a good soldier, or even a mediocre one, chances are you are every bit as physically capable as some skinny, frequently dehydrated, soldier from bygone years. Especially now that we know as much as we do about the human body.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you but this is one thing that grinds my gears.
