I've been an OBGYN for a very long time. I've seen lots of shit. I've seen terrible, awful, beautiful things. But today? Today took the cake. A white couple came in and looked amazing. She was beautiful, blond, athletic, barely looked pregnant. He looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. Labor lasted 36 hours. We thought several times about doing a cesarean but she and kept on insisting on pushing through it. Both of their families were there. Many people from her family and Iceland had flown all the way there just to see the new baby. Finally the delivery came and everything changed. The baby was born with no legs and it wasn't breathing. We immediately took the baby over to a nearby table and tried to resuscitate. While we were doing this, the mother started freaking out and went into cardiac arrest. So while I was trying to resuscitate the baby, the nurses went to work on the mom. Meanwhile, the father is running back and forth between his baby and his wife. The families are trying to get in and we have to call in additional staff. There is a parade of staff and family going back and forth in. Everyone is screaming and yelling. Finally, a hush falls over the room. The nurses look at me and shake their heads. I look at the dad, holding his dead legless son in my arms and say I'm sorry theres nothing we can do. He looks down at his son, tears streaming down his face and screams, OH MY GOD HE'S NOT MINE. WHO IS THIS LEGLESS DEAD ASIAN BABY? WHERE IS MY SON? I dont what to say. So I blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.
