Where did you learn how to eat well?

At home. I grew up in a developing country so processed food. was just not a thing. Entirely too expensive to purchase on the regular & taste wise not something we were accustomed to.

Food:Growing up 99% of our meals were cooked at home. Technically quite carb heavy (rice, starch, yams) but always balanced out with loads of vegetables & protein as a staple with lunch/dinner.

Snacks:Snacking was also not a thing like it is here. A snack might be some fruit or roasted peanuts/plantain chips you bought in a tiny bag off a street vendor but I never had a pantry stocked with cookies, chocolate, chips etc. The idea of a pantry with treats was very foreign & again very expensive! So you’d eat heartily at breakfast/lunch/dinner because chances of a snack later were highly unlikely.

Portions: No calorie counting. Ever. You eat till just satiated & walk away. You find that amount is making you gain weight, you eat less & vice-versa. I wasn’t taught anything about good or bad calories. Food was fuel (daily meals) & a luxury (splendid Sunday cooking my mother would whip up).

I didn’t realise until I moved to North America how complicated food can be. I’m thankful I had the base I did as a child/young adult because it’s allowed me never to have any issues with food.
