Where do you draw the line with supporting and listening to an artist?

I think there is a couple things to think about. There are a handful of artists I never liked as people, but am unable to deny their musical genius. When it comes to the music itself and what it contributes to the overall evolution of genres and music as a whole, its undeniable that they had an effect and made a lasting contribution. In these situations I find it very easy to seperate the artist from the art, because I never liked them as people to begin with, I never accepted their worldview in any way. There are very few people I would place into this bucket, (certainly not anyone like XXX).

Then theres the artists who I think are great people when it comes to their perspective and views, but I think do not really make interesting music, I love what these people have to say and I like and support them for that reason, as long as they continue to stick to those values, but I don't respect their music in any lasting way.

Theres also the artists who are the best of both of these worlds, and the worst of both of these worlds.

Where it gets tricky is when someone who you thought was in the "best of both worlds" bucket, is revealed to be not as great of a person as you once thought. You feel betrayed because you were invested in the worldview and perspectives that they were preaching and acting as a role model for, but you also cant deny the contributions they made to music as a whole, the art they created.

From here, for me the choice comes down to, can I move them to that first bucket, is their music that undeniably great? Do I feel so betrayed that the music which is still brilliant, leaves me personally with a bad taste in my mouth and i can no longer enjoy it on a subjective level? Was the brilliance of their music, strongly tied to who they were as a person and what they represented? Will continuing to support them in any monetary way, contribute to making the world a worse place?

There is also a factor of forgiveness over time, somebody like Gucci Mane for example, has done bad things, but he has seemingly been making a genuine effort to change who he is and what he represents, it feels like an authentically positive change, at least for the time being.

I feel like ive typed a bunch of thoughts without arriving at many answers, but I dont know if there is an easy answer.
