Where is a good place to start to gauge interest in an IT career?

FWIW, did a degree in music, including music technology/sound engineering, but mostly enjoyed playing. When I was 18/19 I took a year off to be a pRofFessIoNAl MuSiCIAn, and the best thing I was told during that year by a much older musician who I was playing with and very much respected was "Djam fool bwoy! Go do dat degree!"

...glad I pivoted into IT, then software a few months afterwards. This was a long time ago in a country far far away (my kids are much closer in age to you than me).

If you have a genuine interest and talent with computers, and especially if you can communicate with people, then the hard part is getting your foot in the door. Having a computer related degree helps in this. Not finishing school will be problematic unless you are really lucky.
