Where do you live and how does it impact your view of simple living?

I live in a capital city in Brazil. 2 million inhabitants. You can check an institutional video for tourists (in english) here It's not as perfect as the video shows, but is often considered Brazilian best capital in life quality (to Brazilian standards).

I believe there are heavy restrictions to some aspects of simple living due to the city structure that still does not allow a safe cycling for example. Food here in Brazil is cheap compared to other countries, but our salary is also lower than other places. Brazilian minimum salary/month is $200 and I would say 60% of Brazilians families live with this money or less to live. Less than 1% have a salary higher than $2000, it's a really unequal country.

Simple living here is not a trend, is a necessity to most of the population. Well, I would say most of the population try to survive here, and not to live. Just a small % have real access to culture, top electronics, eating out, time to practice sports. In large cities like São Paulo, there are people that leave home 4AM to get to work at 8AM. It's a simply 8 hours commute everyday, to receive 1 or 2 minimum salaries. I do think this is insane, but 4 hours commute daily is not so far from the reality of most people, even in my city that has a good transport system.

So, in my opinion, discussing simple living methods as we do here in this sub is not what most Brazilians do. Or they are trying to survive in a urban area, or they are in a rual area with a lack of basic infrastructure (sewers, internet, good roads), or they are part of a fraction of the population that does have money but most of the times prefer to live in a consumption life trying to emulate a life in a rich country.

Cycling, vegan places, anticonsumption ideas are starting to grow, at least in my city, but those ideas are being discussed by that 1% that gets more than $2000/month, it's really far from being a popular topic. In my city or in my country, the situation is similar.
