Where and when did you see The Exorcist for the first time and did it scare you?

I saw it in the cinema in the UK in 1998. At the time it was still technically banned on home video in Britain (having not been granted a BBFC certificate for home viewing). A rare cinema showing was the only legal way to release it and as this was before internet file-sharing became a thing not many people of my generation (I was 18 at the time) had seen it.

I remember feeling a mixture of shock, amusement and fear. I found some of the footage (the crucifixion scene in particular) surprisingly graphic compared to more recent horror at the time. But the audience laughed at some of the more schlocky parts. The bits I found most frightening were the more subtle moments such as the opening in Iraq and the scene with the noise in the attic.
