Where's the Hindu...anything?

Does the Hindu religion actually forbid depictions of gods/godesses? I can save you time by saying it does not, so if I go and say Hinduism forbids you to get a haircut, you can't just validate my idea because I said I'm a Hindu, in this case, this man is wrong as well, there is NO BASIS for his complaint in the religion, yet everyone legitimizes his complaint.

A religion of 1 billion increases the factors of receiving a response then any of the dead religions do by shear numerical factor alone. The Shinto of Japan are largely secular and don't actually hold the gods as sacred reality anymore, and similar statements can be made of urbanized China, although in rural areas the belief can be more sincere.

I have to ask was the negative publicity largely by Hindus, and Hindu media? Or was it westerners and western media picking it up on this Rajan's complaint?

I would draw a comparison to Charlie Hebdo and say that this line of reasoning is self censorship, in that case the depiction of Muhammed is actually forbidden by certain strands, and yet in this case there is no reason to justify his complaint on the depiction of Kali.
