I sort of never got deep into the story before the documentary, but I think his gross but clever move was turning the story to be about Soon-Yi. Because that was a scandal but you could sort of defend him- it seemed to me, ok, he's an unconventional guy, didnt really live with Farrow or raise Soon-Yi, probably wasn't any father figure. Then they fell in love and he followed his heart... The Dylan story sort of faded and if you didnt dig into it like I didn't, it just seemed like some rumor half of his kids dispute anyway that happened later in life.

Then in the documentary you realize the girl was telling the same story from back when she was a kid. And he obviously used Soon-Yi to shut down the Dylan story because he realized that one can be spun into a romantic (even if a bit fucked up) narrative, but it was a total lie! He clearly never had any feelings or real plans with that girl until it became a perfect excuse to make Mia look bitter and Dylan irrelevant. Then it was all about how he loves Soon-Yi

Watching that all I could think was what a gross man. But it's so easy to buy into idea of him, he looked so goofy and benign, a neurotic intellectual, I even found him truly funny and I dont find anything funny... beautiful movies... but all the evidence put together he is actually just a very powerful man who did horrible things. Appearances can be so deceiving
