The Virgin Mary episode. The entire episode was slightly off. It was like Sopranos on ambien. The colors seemed darker and the festival thing was shot in a peculiar way. There was a scene of some local citizen paying respects to Paulie and showing off his son who had just returned from Afghanistan. It was very weird and was strangely bleak. In previous seasons, a local citizen kissing up to one of the mob guys would have been shown through a glamorized hue, but in the episode it came off as gray and dispiriting, with a sense of foreboding that too much insanity and cruelty had been expended at that point for any of the mob guys to truly enjoy the perks of their position.

The virgin mary scene was truly frightening and it scared me more than any horror gimmick I had ever seen. It was so unexpected and so incongruous with how the entire show had been shot up until that point. The guitar sounded like an emanation from a terrifying supernatural realm.
