Which high profile court case had the most controversial "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" verdict?

It's one of those rare unsolved murders that you like being unsolved because the guy was such a huge piece of shit. He had over 20 charges filed against him over the decades for rape, arson, assault, theft, etc. The only time he was ever successfully charged was when he shot an old man in the neck and was only charged with assault and never spent any time in jail. So when everyone in town met up to discuss what to do with McElroy the Sheriff said "Legally, there's not much I can do. How about all of you get together and form a neighborhood watch? Also, completely unrelated, I am going to leave town for a few days. ;) "
