Which JRPGs made you care about the characters the most (due to the backstory, character interaction etc.)?

Final Fantasy VIII. Squall.

[Squall](A lot of responsibility is thrust upon the main character, who is 18, and he takes it about as well as one would expect an 18 year old to take it. He flips the fuck out under all the pressure. In most JRPGs the main character easily rolls with all the ahit that goes down. He isn't perfect, freaks out, and uses the first chick that's really into him as a way to escape... Well, the first that isn't sexually harrassing him. Rinoa is his first, uh, crush and it really shows with how stupid he acts around her. Squall graduates from the military industrial complex high school and in a week or two becomes the owner of Super-Blackwater... )
