Which little known films from the 1980s would you recommend seeing?

A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon - Aspired to be more than just another teen sex comedy but much of the heart of it was gutted by the studio. Still, River Phoenix gives a strong performance and you can still see some residue of the original vision.

Running on Empty - An absolute masterpiece directed by Disney Lumet and starring River Phoenix, Martha Plimpton, Judd Hirsch, and Christine Lahti. It's about a family on the run and how the coming-of-age teen wants to have a normal life. Some reason it's been forgotten over the years.

Little Darlings - Another excellent forgotten film, though perhaps it's a bit dated? This was back in the early 80s when summer camp movies were the rage and this one is about teen girls who have contest about who can lose their virginity first. Tatum O'Neal, Kristy McNichol, and Matt Dillon star. It is a great movie and manages to be funny, moving, and emotionally engaging.

Ruthless People - If this little known? It's an awesome movie and funny as hell directed by Zucker Zucker and Abrahams so should be fairly well known, but it never seems to get much attention. It's a kidnapping gone wrong in the most hilarious way when Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater kidnap Bette Midler for a ransom. Only problem is that the husband is Danny DeVito and he wants them to keep her. Lots of insane twists and turns that keep the movie going.

Runaway Train Another movie that shouldn't be little known but that never seems to get attention. Written by Akira Kurosawa, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. starring Eric Roberts and Jon Voight as two convicts who escape prison and get trapped on a runaway train along with the railworker Rebecca DeMornay. Fantastic movie.
