Which would you rather have for your application?

While the first answer no doubt may be more preferable for your CAS report thanks to USNWR, at the end of the day there is more to life than your law school application. You are person outside of this admissions game, too, and arguably if you fall into the second category will have a whole host of experiences that will travel with you throughout life, making you a well rounded, interesting person. I’m only an applicant so I can’t say how much this will explicitly help you within the legal field, though I imagine it will with interviews, networking, and diversity. However, I know that I personally would be unwilling to sacrifice that much of a difference in quality of education in the narrow pursuit of a single, risky, career path. If you have a 4.0 gpa in general studies you will be stressed throughout all of law school because there is no fall back. The 3.5 from MIT will always have other career options. Plus, what would mean more to you? Especially if you didn’t have to work hard at all for that 4.0 in general studies at a no name university—you will be at a significant disadvantage among peers from elite universities who are used to navigating difficult coursework.
