At least for me, and others disagree so YMMV. But I avoid carbs high on the Glycemic index for most of my meals. This may sound like fluff but read up on the GI data for certain carbs. In basic terms, it is a measurement of how closely a carb resembles straight sugar in relation your blood glucose response.

I've found that if I eat carbs high on the GI index, Bread, Pasta, Sugar that I have extreme hunger swings, get tired during the day and don't sleep as well. I also am 90% sure I have some form of gluten intolerance, either that or it's a placebo effect but either way I feel noticeably worse when I eat anything with gluten.

I get my carbs from veggies, berries and nuts with limited potatoes and rice. This keeps me pretty baseline during the day and really helps my cravings.
