The White House’s Failure in Puerto Rico Was Even Worse Than We Knew

Not having relationships with established and respected contractors is one thing, and FEMA should get every bit of blame for that and work to establish those types of relationships as soon as possible.

But the idea that FEMA should or could have delivered massive resources ahead of the storm is just nutty.

I say this as a Miami resident who's been through many storms, including Andrew. You can't predict the bands, you can't predict what areas are going to be hit until maybe 6-12 hours out.

Miami was supposed to be devastated by sustained cat 5 bands, but Irma shifted west literally hours before it would've nailed us.

If you're saying Puerto Rico should've been better supplied ahead of the storm, you're saying that all of Florida and Texas and Louisiana should be better supplied ahead of every storm with a similar tracking path.

That's not feasible.

Take the right lessons and improve FEMA.

Don't use Puerto Rico as a political football.
