White House: We will respond to Russia hacks

Summary of response: it will be directly proportional and unable to be revealed [due to classified nature of cyberwarfare]

Disclosure... I took a personal interest in posting this because I saw the astroturfing of the previous thread (where ODNI accused Ru govt of being behind Guccifer 2.0). I work at a mid-level position in the US IC (terrible of me to say this here, but whatever) and it was honestly kind of gut wrenching to see the quality of responses that had 1000s of upvotes.

I understand cynicism of the US after Colin Powell waved around a vial at the UN a decade and a half ago. But the level of dialogue I saw in that previous thread was just beyond belief: people suggested there is no way the US government, with NSA and Cybercommand, could figure a data exfilitration scheme may have been by a . Any reasonable response was buried by"USA lying", "dae I'm a IT guy who once held a low level clearance, there's NO WAY US could know it", "where's the evidence", etc. The simple alternative explanation that the US has the ability to sit on the tools and see where everything is moving and going was effectively blocked out. The Snowden leaks even highlighted many cases where the US had sophisticated ways to sit on cyber actors (eg the document that highlights how US spies on NK through SK cyber actors). Consider this a halfway leak since it was already confirmed by ODNI anyway, but I will say at the risk of my career: yes, Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian GRU operation, there is technical evidence, no, we can't show exactly what tools and how we see where the data goes and etc because we're not going to play our hand to satisfy a cynical public when anyone concerned with policy or reaction will see what they need to see.
