Who was someone that was your "perfect match", and how did you screw it up with them?

They already had a partner they loved, like really loved...you could hear it in their suddenly soft voice when they talked on the phone. I was dealing with a massive drug problem and they knew it. We went to the same college and talked until 2 in the morning. We smoked outside where we weren’t supposed to smoke, and they said I had large eyes. They were witty and sharp and so intelligent, and I could have been too, if it werent for the drugs. They tried to help me... but I was just bad news, although I didn’t do anything crappy to them. The last time we spoke was me telling them I had to go to rehab/hospital and saying goodbye.

I cleaned up completely. If we’d met years later, it could have been good. I didn’t know them long enough to be sure of a perfect romantic match, but as a person, I haven’t met anyone I got along with so well. They don’t have a social media so we aren’t in touch, and anyway we were realizing our relationship/closeness was becoming innapropriate.

It’s been a few years, and I still have their phone number. I don’t know if one day I’ll ask how they’re doing. We’d only known each other for a few months but they had an impact on me. Maybe I’ll let them know that I’m alive...
