You will own nothing and you will be happy

Eh, I'm gonna go against the grain a bit here and say the bank isn't necessarily wrong. Not to be all "us poor owners" but being able to afford mortgage payments isn't, on it's own, an indicator that you can afford home ownership. My disposable income plummeted once I bought a house, even though the mortgage payments were only £100 or so a month more than my rent had been. Between life insurance premiums, buildings insurance, and the never-ending line of maintenance that needs doing, it's more subtle than just "I can afford that monthly mortgage payment".

I do think your ability to pay rent should count on credit scores though. Ridiculous that such a commitment counts for nothing.
