Will Smith Apologizes to Chris Rock for Oscars Slap: ‘I Was Out of Line and I Was Wrong’

While I originally enjoyed the spectacle like everyone else, this is a man in trouble and we should all take a moment before piling on the hate. He was out of line but there's nothing funny about watching someone who has managed a decades-long career implode personally and professionally.

We love to build celebrities up into idols and pull them down with collective glee when they show, like the rest of us, that they are flawed humans who do not deserve to be put on pedestals. Is it hard to believe that being publicly humiliated by his wife would mean that he is likely working through some tough emotional shit and that kind of rage is very likely a cry for help?

There's talk about toxic masculinity and how men should be able to show vulnerability. He was and still is publicly ridiculed for doing exactly that previously. The truth is that if the gender roles were reversed and Will had announced live on air that he had an "entanglement" with his daughter's friend and brought Jada to tears, he'd be demonised as an emotionally abusive asshole. Her emotional outbursts and downwards spiral in the aftermath would be met with sympathy. His relationship with his wife is clearly a source of pain and inner conflict after 25 years.

I'm a huge fan of good entertainment but we give the stars far too much credit. Celebrity culture itself is problematic, it distorts and consumes people. What outcome do we want here? Drug overdose? DUI? Arrest and imprisonment? Suicide? Any of the typical ways that stars destroy themselves so that we can delight in their downfall?
