Give it another shot (lol) sometime at a range specifically for new shooters, or even a new shooters class.
When I was RSO I saw so many people leaving the range almost shell shocked because the more experienced person that brought them decided to set them up poorly with their first shooting experience. You can develop something called shooters flinch from starting on a higher caliber then necessary.
I'd go find an outdoor range that offers new shooter classes. The classes we had ran .22 handguns, so there was a low recoil and noise. Being outdoors is also less stressful as everyone else's shots aren't rattling around the range shaking your brain.
