Winter driving advice

You also need to pump the gas pedal in this situation.

  • go into slide, release gas pedal

  • look/steer in corrective direction

  • once wheels are pointed to correct slide apply firm gas pedal pressure. Don't stomp on it, but a firm pressure to engage torque at the wheels to correct the slide

  • feel vehicle correcting direction, still sliding, but moving towards forward correction, let off gas a little. Don't let off, but you're coming out of the slide and now do not want to over correct and start fish tailing.

  • as vehicle comes out of initial slide, point wheels straight and apply firm gas pedal pressure again. Again, don't stop on in, but firm pressure to now right the vehicle straight forward.

If you don't use the gas pedal to right the change in tire direction you're likely to just keep sliding in whatever direction the slide initiated in while you spin the steering wheel hopelessly.
