I wish doctors would take women’s health concerns more seriously

In the UK there are strict national guidelines for symptomatic breast investigation. All women with a lump should be referred for a clinical exam with a breast surgeon. Women under 40 will generally get an ultrasound targeted to the area of concern with a mammogram only if the clinical exam or ultrasound are highly suspicious.

If this is the same case as the recent BBC article, the patient had an ultrasound that showed a simple cyst. So she either had her ultrasound misdiagnosed (which would be difficult, cysts are well seen on ultrasound and if they are "simple" they are 100% benign), or more likely she had a cancer somewhere else in her breast that was not at the location of the lump. Ultrasound isn't great at assessing the entire breast, so its generally targeted to an area of concern and isn't used for screening (mammography is). Mammography generally isn't recommended in young women because the cancer risk is low, breast tissue is more dense so you see less, and frequent radiation a young age is best avoided.

I agree that health care providers should take the concerns of young women more seriously, but this doesn't sound like someone who was ignored, but an unfortunate case of a cancer that spread before it was symptomatic or a case of misdiagnosis from her scan.
