With so many horrible and depressing stories being told on reddit about people being shit, what's your personal story that always makes you smile?

TL;DR: Got surprised with kittens. Best day ever.

One day, when I was in 6th grade, I was talking on the phone with a friend when my mom came home from running errands. She told me to immediately get off the phone, so adolescent me was a little pissed, but I complied. Then she said she had something to show me outside. Begrudgingly, I trudged out the back door and saw nothing there. I told my mom as much.

"Look at the car," she said. I freaked out a little, thinking she had been in an accident or something. But then I saw it.

A little black face with little black whiskers was peeking over the dashboard. I gasped. "THERE'S A KITTY IN THE CAR!"

"Yep," mom said. Just then, a second tiny kitten face popped up beside that one.

I gasped again. "THERE'S TWO KITTIES IN THE CAR!!! Are there any more?"

Mom laughed and said nope, just those two. I probably would have passed out if there had been more, haha.

So we both got into the car and sat with the two black kittens and talked about what to do with them. Mom had been pulled over in the parking lot of a closed down movie theater when she saw these two kittens sitting in some grass by a lamp post, the ones with those yellow cement circular bases. Well one of the kitties decided to walk toward the car, crossing a semi-active backroad to do it, and mom freaked out, jumped out of the car, and scooped them both up to keep them safe. Plus, it was October, close to Halloween, which is a bad time for black cats outdoors. And unfortunately, Mom recalled seeing a black cat on the side of the road in the same area the previous day. Those babies were homeless and too young to be alone, so we gave them a very good one. They were so tiny then, each fit in one of my hands and I was only 11 at the time. Both of them have passed now, but they were both so incredibly special to us. The boy was a genius of a cat - loved to play fetch and he was adorable playing with cherries (he liked to hold them by the stem and shake them, haha.) The girl was stubborn and sweet and had a heart-shaped nose. I think of them and miss them both, as well as our other departed pets, often.

So we ended up driving with them to the pet store, got some kitten food, and went back home to introuce them to our dog and cat and bathe them up.
