Without Uber or Lyft, Austin Experiences Skyrocketing DUI Rates

I live in NYC and Uber has changed my life. Yes, you can get anywhere via public transportation, but it is not always safe, particularly if you are female and it is late at night. I could take a taxi (and I used to), but sometimes that would mean standing alone on a desolate street corner in a not great neighborhood for 15 minutes. Again, not an option I love. I particularly dislike that option for my teenage daughters, whose sports practices end late at night in not great neighborhoods. Now, with Uber, they can stay inside the gym with the security guard until the Uber car arrives. 8$, home in less than 10 minutes, and peace of mind. This particular issue (getting my kids home from late night sports practices) has been a problem for me for years -- back before Uber I once looked into hiring a driver to do it. The guy wanted $90 a trip (three hour minimum, 30$ an hour). Finally, when my 83 year old mother comes to town, we take Uber even for short trips, ones that I would normally walk. She can only walk so much in a day, and we prefer to use the steps inside an art gallery rather than getting to it. Again, we could use a taxi, but then there is still the walking to the corner, and also the issue of waiting in the cold or rain or heat or whatever. Just another perspective. Not everyone is a 20ish male.
