If you think it’s a foul there’s really no hope. There is a tiny amount of contact which satisfies none of the offenses that result in a direct free kick. He does not trip the player. There is contact which is not a trip in itself followed by the attacker diving.

And to prevent players being doubly punished is absolutely the reason the rule change was brought in. For years we saw reds given when a player DOGSO whilst genuinely attempting to play the ball. A harsh punishment which often unreasonably ruined the game as a contest. The rule was changed and has gone part way to fixing that problem. I’m sure we’ll see them review the wording again before too long.
