You understand that "Republican" is simply a termed used to describe a political group at a moment in time? When Republican was used /u/Whatsthedealwithit11, clearly they meant modern day Republicans. The fact that anyone could find the fact that the political party that called itself "Republican" 160 years ago has anyone relevance to modern day discussion after the massive political upheaval caused by FDR in the 1930s (where region mattered more than political party) speaks very negatively of their ability to separate the sound of a word from its meaning. The Republicans are no more the party of Lincoln than Democrats are the party of Jackson.
