Where I live at least the tradition for minorities and perps the cops dislike is called a rough ride. They’re thrown handcuffed, either in the back seat if they’re lucky or into the wagon which is all hard easy clean fibreglass for drunks. The cops proceed to drive back to the station via a circuitous route with a lot of emergency stops, hard turns and other driving designed to throw someone who can’t use their hands to protect themselves violently around the vehicle.

They write up the report as “agitated party was observed thrashing in vehicle while restrained. Minor self inflicted injuries.”

If you’ve ever been in a car without a seatbelt when someone makes an emergency stop or some hard turns (not saying it’s a good idea, just saying I’m old and seatbelts were more optional when I was a kid in a rural area in the 80s) you know just how minor those injuries aren’t.
