Woman dies of dehydration and urinary tract infection in nursing home — staff 'don't have time' for care | CBC News

You know what...fuck every commenter on this sub. Alls you are doing is bitching at a problem and not doing anything. Private healthcare companies are literally endangering and killing those that they shelter and making money hand over fist and have been doing this for decades...and y’all damn well have known it, we have TVs and internet and this isn’t the first death... and your writing your comment for fake internet points and gratification. Read some of the stories from healthcare workers on this sub, we have been crying for help, we can only do so much, the public really needs to push to get more laws in place.

As a healthcare worker we have asked you time and time and time again to actually do something. Take your anger to paper and pen and write your local MLA, call them, email them, show up and demand that more legislation be enacted to “at the bare minimum” PROTECT those that need assistance. A scheduled 5-6:1 resident:psw ratio from 0700-1400 6:1 from 1600-2200 and at least a 12:1 psw ratio from 2300-0700.

All those personal care hour studies are done by someone who is a pencil pusher and has never worked in LTC. Give me legislation in staffing ratios.

I have written countless letters and reasonings why this is important but I am a drop in the bucket. It’s like it takes a news article and a public death for people to suddenly remember again.

Please, please google your local MLA or fb message them, email, I don’t care, just contact them and let know that this is important to you and there needs to be a legislated change.

And for those that say there’s a lot of ‘standing around’ look at the times you see us do that. We have to squeeze in everyone’s breaks from 10ish-11ish(after breakfast but before lunch) and second break somewhere between 1pm-2:30(after lunch) but we also have to do toileting and down for naps for majority of residents depending on what activities are available and still have a staffed floor. Also, a lot of staff leaves at 1pm and we’re pretty short staffed until right before dinner. Inquire what psw shifts are to your local LTC home and you’d be surprised on the ratios and their hours. A lot of staff just have a quick coffee and bite to eat in the office(where you see us) instead of lunch lounge cause we don’t take our full 15mins because we have shit to do.
