A woman and a little kid drown while kayaking on a school trip in Kaaawa.

IDK, I have all kinds of mixed feelings about this. Depends on conditions, depends on the boat and it depends on who is in the water with you. I would NOT be OK with a teacher taking my 5 year old out farther than he could swim back without a pfd or at least a second adult as a wingman; especially considering there were other kids near by that the teacher was responsible for. That being said, would I have felt OK taking him out myself or would I have been OK with my dad or brother doing the same? If they were inside the reef and conditions were as calm as I think they were yesterday then, yea, I would. When I take my littlest ones out in the 2-man, if we are going surfing or going out any real distance, I put them in a pfd. Yesterday’s accident spooks me because it seems like they were inside, on a super stable boat and it was on a calm day. This serves as a reminder that if a kid can’t take over and get to shore without help, then they still need to be in a PFD, also little kids who still rely on adults in the water should not outnumber the adult/adults who are supervising them. I can’t get complacent just because conditions are nice, I could drop dead of a ruptured aneurysm and without a pfd, one casualty turns into two.
