Woman rushes into a police station with a lifeless pup

TL: No, MOST first responders are not formally trained on animal resuscitation.

Hello, I am a FF/paramedic in Florida. Despite not formally being taught animal first aid we do carry an assortment of breathing masks (a modified human non rebreathing mask with an elongated nose) for our furry friends. We primarily use them to revive pets that are pulled from fires, but they can be used for other respiratory emergencies.

Without being on scene or seeing the full video with the right angles I can’t say for certain what they did or what the problem was specifically.

My guess is that once EMS/FIRE arrived they assessed the airway and used a nifty tool called magills forceps to retrieve an obstruction. The mask was then placed over the nose and mouth delivering medical grade oxygen and luckily restored consciousness.

The pup would then be transported to a vet to evaluate it’s vital signs and probably some kind of neurological exam. Depending on the amount of time the brain went with little to no oxygen the pup may not be the same.

Again, I am not a vet and am trying to translate my knowledge of human medical emergencies as simple, informative and concisely as possible.

Hope this helped :)
