A woman who mutilated her three-year-old daughter has become the first person in the UK to be found guilty of female genital mutilation (FGM).

The issue of FGM is that it is hard to tackle it with western liberal principles as those overly focus on individuals. The justice system sees and punishes individual perpetrators for individual crimes, this approach is used on groups as well. Who is guilty of what despite the perpetrators being separate would not commit a crime.

The FGM is a result of certain system of oppression that certain cultures have. The correct approach would be to address it systematically. Education, raising awareness and then punishing those who ordered the FGM, not who carried out the order to use the limited western justice system effectively and not just prosecute the sonderkommando as said above.
