Women are more likely to volunteer for non-promotable tasks, or tasks "that benefit the organization but likely don’t contribute to someone’s performance evaluation and career advancement"

Just because employees go above and beyond with the mindless activities doesn't mean they aren't useless at actual job functions though. At my work place we have a whole process for scanning and discarding files for kiddos once they turn 18. We always seem to have one a two useful idiots who a self-motivated to do this. The company wouldnt burn down if they didnt do this, other people would have to pick up the slack, but nobody is getting promoted for the thing anybody can do.

Promotions are based on performance and the ability to not only to do your job, but to do the next job. Unfortunately effort doesn't get you a whole lot when you're trying to run a business. The charismatic, lazy person who makes important, good decisions is the one getting promoted.
