Women who have been abroad: what were the biggest culture shocks you've experienced?

Let's see:

  • public bathrooms (not for the faint of heart in many, many places.)
  • no ice in the drinks, and strange looks if you ask for it (many places in Europe)
  • an arrow pointing to Mecca on the ceiling of hotel rooms (Malaysia)
  • call to prayer/traffic resulting from prayer (especially on Fridays! Malaysia)
  • 3 lanes marked, and at least 5 lanes of cars traveling (India)
  • soldiers with guns on public buses (as security) (Central America)
  • Restaurants open way, way later for the dinner hour (Spain)
  • lots and lots of stray animals. (well, a lot of places.)
  • no conversation with people you do not know OR a lot of interest in talking to people who are clearly tourists ("Why did you come here? What do you think of our country? Explain US foreign policy towards our country." etc.)
  • I traveled alone in India and at every hotel, they had me down as "Mr. [firstname] [lastname]" This is notable because I am ethnically Indian and my first name is always, always, always female. (In fact, there is a male version of my first name.) I guess it just did not grok that I was traveling alone as a woman, therefore must be man? I made them change it, which took like 30 minutes because of everything being in triplicate/carbon paper, etc.
  • sometimes absolutely dizzying levels of officiousness/bureaucracy for even simple tasks. (Ex. 3 chits of paper, 2 signatures, and about 5 loud stampings of the 3 chits of paper to change money in Costa Rica.)
  • A different version of "but where are you really from?!?!" Apparently, only white people can be American. (Maybe black people can too, unclear.) Had a few guys follow me singing Bollywood songs in Barcelona. This is especially funny because I don't know any Hindi. (Considered saying "Sing something in Tamil!" :) )
