Women who used to suppress their emotions, how did you learn to accept your feelings without the need to always feel fine?

By repeating "Your feelings are valid" in my head. Also the "cool girl" monologue from Gone Girl made me realize "holy crap, I'm not the only one who feels this way!"

I always felt like the "ideal" woman smile-talks and never gets made. . .like even if she gets robbed at gunpoint on her way to a night out, she'll arrive with a smile and say "I got robbed! That wasn't very nice!" and then she has a great night anyway because she is the "cool girl" who has no negative emotions.

It helped me get over the hump and feel comfortable accepting and expressing my feelings in my personal life -- if you're sad, it's ok to cry, even if the other "cool girl" in the room doesn't cry over such things.

I do, however, cover my emotions in my professional life.
