This is why you won’t find me complaining about open carry at protests. People become a lot calmer and respectful when there’s a visible balance of power.

I think you severely underestimate the incidents. We hear about the ones that make it to the media or go viral. We never hear about the ones where the footage isn’t released, about the records of many police in the force until it gets National attention, about the abuse of power employed to get damn near anything to stick and ruin someone’s life because a cop has a bad day, about how the cops railroad people who file complaints or who are unjustly detained or charged.

The fact is, with an organization tasked with such powers, the acceptable margin for error shrinks. You can’t just be okay with it because they’re an organization too and prone to issues. The penalties for someone who breaks the law while specifically take with enforcing the law should always be higher than those who aren’t. That’s how you keep these things in check.

They don’t have to be perfect, but they should not be abusing their power to sidestep oversight and consequences, ruin citizen’s lives for profit (not just monetary), and upholding a system with very clear systemic issues because “thin blue line”. Fuck that.
