Wonder why our office is such a sty.

This is exactly right! Its a very similar concept to what rurals do. Except we aren't allowed to go home after we complete our work. We still stay on the clock and react to spills, or specific areas that need cleaning. Most people don't understand this is how custodial staffing works. Certain "routes" have a predetermined time based on square footage and frequency. This is how long is alloted for this time. The combination of all these projected hours for one shift, is how they determine our staffing package. If we decide to fly through and do tons of extra work daily, in true postal fashion, they just abolish jobs in the long run.

This is true in almost all crafts though. If carriers start carrying 2 hour undertime pivots daily, then their route will get an addition and it can hurt the carriers overall.

Most custodians I work with, do pride themselves on keeping the building as clean as we can. Especially in these COVID times. The custodial craft gets a bad rap because of some bad workers, but the majority of us try to do our best.
