I work in the Brooks Trailhead store inside the Brooks Running HQ in Seattle, WA! AMA!

OK, here it goes.

For awhile, we actually had a working Skee-ball machine in the store, with two lanes that you could play against someone. It was actually super cool and would make for great parties in the store, but the problem was, it was CRAZY loud. If someone was playing it when we we're helping customers, we almost had to move them away from the machine so we didn't have to shout and keep repeating ourselves over the noise. Now, the machine was always meant for customers, and I think we had it in the store since the opening, to attract new people.

Well, theirs this one family who would come in around once a month since they found out the machine was free just to play skee-ball. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but it was, for a few reasons.

  • First, they would play not just a few games, but for hours.
  • Second, they always sat right next to the machine, for reasons explained below which is...
  • And lastly, they would always pretend to buy stuff and try on shoes, just so they could keep playing. I know this because I would try to help fit the mom for shoes, but every time her son would start a new game, she would just suddenly stop talking to me and go play, leaving me just awkwardly standing there until she finished that game. She would then come back, after not even paying attention to the shoes at all, tell me they don't fit right, and ask to try another random pair, regardless of what my recommendation was for her. I'd come back with the shoes, and she would be already in another game. Finish the game, put one on, play again, put the other shoe on, play again, walk around a bit, play again, then say they don't work and ask for a new pair and the cycle continues for like an hour (all while being crazy loud and disrupting all my other co-workers trying to help people, the machine was right next to half of the display shoes)

This went on for months until eventually, we had to put a sign up directly over the start button that asked customers to limit skee-ball to 3 games because it was so loud.

THEY STILL IGNORED IT FOR ANOTHER 3 MONTHS

At this point, we actually just had to move the game out. It sucked, because there were a ton of really nice people who just played a game with their kids for fun and took genuine interest in our products, but this one family just ruined it by being really rude and inconsiderate.

I gotta say though, the look on their faces when they came back and it was gone was priceless. They just couldn't believe it, but at the same time, they couldn't say it was the only reason they came into the store. We told them it was gone for repairs and we weren't sure when it would come back. They just stared blankly at me and awkwardly wandered around for like 5 minutes and just left. I never thought I would get so much satisfaction of watching them flounder like that but it made all other times worth it.

Never seen them again since.
