Working as a system engineer. Want to be a game dev

I think a lot of programmers dream of being a game developer. I'm assuming you want to work for like EA or something?

When I see the 100s of people involved in a single game for the major platforms, it makes me wonder how exciting that would be. A lot of it is artistic folks that create the 3D solid frames and backgrounds etc. So it's not really that technical, other than using software for art design. Not too different than animation at a movie studio.

So if you aren't an art major, this may not be up your alley.

And you figure with dozens of coders, coding can be pretty boring as well if you're just writing code for a part of the game.

One option would be writing games for Android/iOS. And selling those yourself. But man, so many people do that. It's hugely competitive. But it would probably be more enjoyable than just hacking out a part of code for a giant game.

I doubt you'd ever get a chance to develop your own idea for a huge game. That is some serious money involved.

The grass is always greener, you think this job sucks but it could be much worse. I'm assuming you make decent money? Imagine not finding anything but retail. Or a low-wage help desk job.

If you like programming, find something else other than gaming, too many want to write games, IMHO.
