In a world first, Australia introduces 'no jab, no pay' policy. Those families who don't immunise will lose welfare benefits

It is honestly so sad how so few people are paying attention to the fact that welfare is being used as a weapon against those in poverty. For many people in countries like the United States, Australia, and England all that stands between them and death are welfare benefits and social programs. The idea of the government being able to take that away from those people and let them slowly suffer, for refusing a vaccination is Orwellian.

I understand that all that stands between many people and death are those precious vaccines and the understanding that every healthy person get one. The government has a duty to it's citizens to protect them, and as such should put forth great effort to make sure every healthy person who is able to be vaccinated for deadly illnesses gets vaccinated. However, if we live in a truly free society, everyone should have full authority over what goes into our bodies. That being said, the government has the right to keep you out of public schools and other government property where you may pose a considerable threat due to you not being vaccinated. The government should not be able to withhold life saving social services.

Refusing a citizen welfare for not being vaccinated does not make anyone safer, there is only a loss. This person is still a threat to specific people who rely on herd immunity and now their safety is jeopardized as well. Of course most people will vaccinate (as most sensible people already are) to keep their welfare benefits, but then we arrive at to a place where the government is essentially forcing you to act against their beliefs for the sake of their well being. And the major problem with this particular execution, it doesn't target people who don't vaccinate, it targets poor people who don't vaccinate. This is extremely ineffective, as most people who refuse to vaccinate in industrial countries, are rich people.

It would be more rational (in my opinion) to find the way to penalize people who are not vaccinated with a small fee yearly, which goes towards educating people about vaccines and vaccine development. Provide waivers for the fee based on income. And have the government do its best to keep people who rely on herd immunity safe, short of forcing needles into everyone. I can understand how some will find the idea Orwellian still.
